Gifts That Keep Giving

goodwill logo#Giving Tuesday is over but that doesn’t mean to stop giving. You can give money, pack a box, knit a scarf for a homeless person or simply get rid of your old stuff and take it to your local GoodwillGoodwill Donation Center.

At the beginning of the month, I started cleaning out Fall things and bringing out the holiday decorations. I found plenty of things I didn’t need cluttering up my storage areas, drawers and garage. At one point, I wanted them. At one point, they were a new gift or an item I saw at the store I likedand bought. Now, they sit dusty and unused and there’s a place for that – NOT IN MY HOUSE.

This week, I am taking my old items past the curb on Friday and onto the Goodwill store where donations create jobs and change lives. Watch the following video about how Goodwill changed the life of this woman, Candice.

Some ways of giving are easier than others. Getting rid of your old items and getting a charitable tax deduction out of it is one of the easiest!

To see the impact your donation makes, check out the Goodwill donation impact calculator. To find a store near you, go to the website and simply enter your zip code.

This donation picture was from when I was helping my mom this last summer clean out her house and my childhood memories and she took ALOT to Goodwill!

New Pink Ribbon Bracelets by Joseph Nogucci

Recently I received this lovely Pink Ribbon Charmballa bracelet by Joseph Nogucci for review. The bracelet features beads carved with pink ribbons set in a string of silver Rhodium plated charms and sewn with a pink nylon cord. I like the weight of it and I’ve gotten used to the way the cord pulls tight.

Breast Cancer Society of Canada

Pink ribbons are scattering the landscape by companies wanting to show their support of breast cancer awareness and so I tend to be careful to check which charity is specifically being supported so I know where my money is going when I support a variety of causes through my purchases. These Joseph Nogucci bracelets specifically support the Breast Cancer Society of Canada.

In-Real-Life at Social Media #MomMixer Holiday Showcase 2013

Vaseline Rosy Lips

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to connect with some of my favorite mom blogging friends at the annual Social Media Mom Mixer Holiday Showcase 2013 held by two of my favorite ladies, Colleen and Whitney. I was a bit late after attending an inspiring breakfast with my local politicians and political candidates, which of course went over since everyone had a word to say, but I made it eventually!

While we made our way around the MomMixer exhibits, we enjoyed water and coffee and snacks provided by CVS Pharmacy and took pictures with Elmo who came on behalf of the PLAYSKOOL Sesame Street play room.

In the lovely ballroom room of the XIX restaurant atop the Hyatt at the Bellevue in Philadelphia, participants could take a fun video of themselves “pretend” spraying themselves with the new Vaseline® Spray & Go Moisturizer. We each received the Vaseline Spray and Go Moisturizer in Cocoa Radiant, 6.5 Ounce and the Vaseline Lip Therapy, Rosy Lips, 0.25 Ounce to take home. My teen girls were fighting over the cute rosy lips container and myself, I really wanted to win the bejeweled version (as pictured here) via the Twitter contest at the event but no big win this time around. Personally, I liked the unscented Spray & Go moisturizer rather than the Cocoa smell since there are so many smells you put on in the morning and I would rather have my perfume be the strongest rather than a strong cocoa smell that reminds me of sunscreen, but that’s just me.

Speaking of perfume, Tommee Tippee had a clever interactive idea. They were highlighting their bottles and diaper container and brought in a perfume making specialist to highlight the good smells we want in life instead of the bad ones (that a diaper might contain, for example). I experimented with a little vanilla base and added in some other delightful smells and received my own bottle of perfume to take home.

Robitussin for the holidays

Next, stop – the Advil booth for kids (and I’m already sold on Advil so that was a no brainer) and then on to another one of  my favorites for kids, Robitussin® which we always have in stock. I spun the wheel to have a wonderful sampling for the holidays sent to my house.

In the toy department, we received an adorable Furby Boom
by HASBRO which has a clever app it can interact with and which I am totally giving my niece for Christmas along with cute Doc McStuffins dolls by Just Play Toys. At the event, we were treated to an overview of the whole new Doc McStuffins suite of toys which allow kids to pretend they are doctors in a fun and clever way.

And, then, I settled into one of the comfy side couches and I can tell you, I didn’t want to get up! It was so great connecting with friends in this beautiful place. I could have sat there all day but soon it was time to go home and get back to the mom life that led me to be a mom blogger in the first place!

(Disclosure: I received a lot of great products to take home and try. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Additional Sponsors include @FireFlytb, @SafariLTD and @MixedBagDesigns.)

Tension is Mounting on The Good Wife – Season Five: Which Team Are You On?

goodwife team florrick

The Good Wife is one of the few shows that continues to surprise and delight with delicious twists and turns. I have watched the show from the beginning and now that it is in its fifth season — just when you think you’ve seen it all, this coming episode on Sunday, October 27th, brings another explosive plot twist.

Alicia Florrick (played by Julianna Margulies) has decided it is time to leave her current position in the firm Lockhart Gardner and start a new firm for herself. When to do it is another question and when to tell firm partner Will Gardner is even more complicated. This coming episode will show what happens when you-know-what hits the fan and Will learns of Alicia’s plans to leave him high and dry.

Alicia is about to make one of the biggest moves of her life and go out on her own. I say – “DO IT!” I am totally on Team Florrick Agos, which means I would love to see Alicia team up with Cary Agos to start their own business. Cary is young and excited and eager to make new things happen. Will is old news and Alicia’s old fling. It’s over, dude. Get used to it. Alicia is back with her husband and ready to get out of a very toxic environment.

Hitting the FanABOUT THE SHOW:

THE GOOD WIFE stars Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Julianna Margulies as Alicia Florrick, a wife and mother who reinvents her life following her husband’s sex and political corruption scandal. Four years into her tenure at the law firm of Lockhart/Gardner, Alicia accepts a prestigious partner offer from her bosses, Diane Lockhart, Will Gardner and David Lee. However, a mutual attraction with Will leaves Alicia conflicted after she agrees to renew her vows with her husband, Peter, who has won the gubernatorial election with the help of campaign manager Eli Gold. After much thought, Alicia agrees to leave Lockhart/Gardner to start a new firm with her colleague, Cary Agos, who is unable to convince investigator Kalinda Sharma to join them. Now, Alicia must find a way to balance her evolving career, her new position as First Lady of Illinois and her roles as a wife and mother to her teenage children, Zach and Grace. Emboldened by the prospect of taking control of her future, Alicia bravely ventures into unknown territory.

My 2 Broke Girls Story

The show 2 Broke Girls, showing at a NEW TIME on Mondays at 8:30/7:30 c on CBS, brings up many memories of my years in college and graduate school when you find yourself excited by the discovery that Ramen noodles and spaghetti sauce actually taste good together and that you can make a meal out of it. And, then there’s mac and cheese with tuna – a complete dish. I know, ugh…

College years are typically when the fun stories really come out. You are on your own, usually no one else to feed, and you need to make decisions on how to make your money last and your food stretch – especially during formal season when you would rather be buying a pretty dress and new heels than eating. I lived for two years in a house of 10 girls and getting that many young women to decide on the temperature in the house is a whole ‘nother story! Up – down- up – down. Oops, who broke the controller? Okay, who is locking the controller? Who didn’t pay the gas bill now that it’s 2 am in the middle of winter with snow on the ground and the gas tank is empty? I was honestly appalled when two girls called their dads and woke them up hours way. I’m like – get off the phone and call the gas man, are you crazy?

Life and finances definitely became more challenging when I moved ten hours from home to go to graduate school far, far away. Other graduate students my age were learning about saving money and being thrifty too. At one point, two students and I took over the rent in a older home in a part of Philadelphia where the houses were still roomy and beautiful inside but the neighborhood was prone to break-ins and characters coming in and out of the rehab facility down the street.

We loved our big spacious house. I was out of the house (cobbling together finances between being a nanny and a babysitter and a secretary in the graduate office) when men broke in during the night. My roommates were in the house at the time and it was scary to hear about the strangers pawing their way through our things while the other girls slept.

It’s not a funny story at all about being broke but where you live is pretty much determined by what you can afford to pay and sometimes being young and innocent doesn’t serve you well in choosing housing. I was engaged and soon on my way to  little apartment in the burbs but my roommates moved out soon after that and found safer housing. It’s a shame since it was such a pretty little part of Philly at one point. Times do change places.

And, now about the show 2 Broke Girls which has the advantage of writers making life appear a lot funnier than it might be sometimes when money is tight and stress is high. Humor is a good thing in all cases.

ABOUT 2 BROKE GIRLS

2 BROKE GIRLS is a comedy about the unlikely friendship that develops between two very different young women who meet waitressing at a diner in trendy Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and form a bond over their dream of one day owning their own successful cupcake business. Only one thing stands in their way – they’re broke. Sarcastic, street-smart Max Black met the sophisticated, school-smart Caroline Channing when the uptown trust fund princess was having a run of bad luck due to her father’s Wall Street scandal, which caused her to lose all her money and forced her to give waitressing a shot. At first, Max sees Caroline as an entitled rich girl, but she’s surprised to find that Caroline has as much substance as she does style. When Caroline discovers Max’s knack for baking amazing cupcakes, she visualizes a lucrative future for them and they begin to save money to reach their start-up money goal of $250,000. As the girls’ cupcake tally expands week-to-week, they become closer to their goal and to each other.
