Moms’ Night Out is OUT in DVD/Blu-Ray!

momsnightout

Laughter rippled through my family room last Friday night where several women from my church congregation came together for a fun “Moms’ Night Out” watching the movie by the same name.

Moms Night Out was just released on DVD and Blu-Ray (not to mention instant viewing on Amazon Prime) and I have to admit that yes, I really have seen this movie FOUR times and still can’t tear my eyes away from everything that ensues when three women decide they need to get out and have some fun and things don’t go exactly as planned.

Sarah Drew, known for her role as Dr. April Kepner in the ABC medical drama series Grey’s Anatomy, plays stressed-out mom Allyson who simply needs to go out with a few friends. Patricia Heaton, known for playing the mom in Everybody Loves Raymond and The Middle,  plays the pastor’s wife who appreciates being invited out while still dealing with arguments with her own daughter – providing contrast between moms of kids at various stages and at the same time, similarities of simply being a mom. The whole family gets involved when a baby goes missing and the women decide to get involved, sacrificing their night of freedom.

Read my previous review when I attended the screening of this movie before it came to theaters. I highly recommend getting this movie and watching it with friends, family, church members. It helps you laugh at bit at yourself, laugh with each other and appreciate the poignant moments when a young mom learns a thing or two about being too hard on herself.

(Disclosure: I received a DVD/Blu-Ray for review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.)

Back-to-School Firsts with Staples

JansportStaples is celebrating Back-to-School “Firsts” and we had a big one this year! For the first time ever, my daughter drove out the driveway and off to school carrying herself and my younger daughter and I was left waving from the front porch as the back of the black Suburban cleared the top of the neighborhood and turned out of sight.

Another first came today when my younger daughter passed her driver’s permit test and will now start learning to drive herself. By March, I may have two licensed teens in the family and much more time to myself – another first! What’s really insane to imagine is that I may be an “empty-nester” in only a year and a half when both girls are off to college, if that’s what life holds for them.

The time is flying and as much as you are ready to enter each new phase, you miss when they fit in your lap, when they still want you to tuck them in, and when they cried for you to come in their room instead of verbally berating you for entering their hallowed sanctuaries. Life is different with teens but I still love them so very much it makes my heart ache to think too hard about it.

On a lighter note, Staples sent us some very special items to help prepare for the start of school, as soon below. My youngest picked the very cool JanSport zebra striped backpack and Fit & Fresh Downtown Insulated Designer Lunch Bag. For a few years, the girls enjoyed buying lunch in the cafeteria but now lines are too long and they enjoy staying back in classrooms for study groups which means you don’t get lunch if you don’t pack it. My youngest likes to pack her own lunch and is the healthiest eater in our family so the insulated lunch bag really comes in handy.

Staples

My older daughter was quite thrilled to take ownership of the Kindle fire HD, mechanical pencils and composition notebook, also sent to us by Staples. I love my own Kindle HD and rave about it and now she has her own. I like the diversity, versatility and affordability of the Kindle fire HD. We have never been a family that had to have expensive Apple products when other options like the Kindle totally suited our needs!

Get the Right Car Seat — Car Passenger Safety Week is September 14-20

Car Safety

Child Passenger Safety Week is September 14-20 and anyone with a child in a car seat is encouraged to visit SaferCar.gov/TheRightSeat to determine if YOUR child is in the right seat for his or her age and size. Car seat check events are planned across the country if you are unsure about your car seat. You may also register your child’s car seat with the manufacturer to be informed in the event of a recall.

Because each seat has different installation instructions, you can also get resources and tips on having the right fit for your car seat.

Research shows that three out of every four car seats are not used correctly, meaning the child is not in the correct car seat for their age, height and weight, or the car seat is not installed correctly. In 2012, over one third (37%) of children killed in car crashes were not in car seats or wearing seat belts.

To locate a Certified Child Passenger Safety technician in your area, go to safercar.gov/therightseat or download the free SaferCar app from the iTunes App Store.

Here are a few tips from SaferCar.gov:

Car Seat Safety Tips:

  • Find a car seat that fits your child. As children grow, how they sit in your car will change. Make sure the car seat you purchase is designed to fit your child’s current size and age.
  • Not all car seats fit in all vehicles so test the car seat you plan to buy to make sure it fits well in your vehicle.
  • Before putting your child in a car seat, read the manufacturer’s instructions so you know how your car seat works.
  • All-in-One car seats offer you the advantage of using the same seat for the following positions: rear-facing, forward-facing with harness, then booster. These seats typically have higher height and weight limits for the rear-facing position, allowing you to keep your child rear-facing for a longer period of time.
  • Remember, the best car seat is the one that fits your child properly, is easy to use, and fits in your vehicle correctly. The information here can help you choose the right seat for your child. Keep in mind that:

o   Your child under age 1 should always ride in a rear-facing car seat.

o   Children ages 1-3 should be kept rear-facing as long as possible.

o   Keep your child in the back seat at least through age 12.

o   Be certain you’ve installed your car seat correctly by having it checked at an inspection station or by a certified child passenger safety technician. Bring the Car Seat Instructions AND the Vehicle Owner’s Manual with you to a seat check appointment!

For more information, head over to SaferCar.gov.

Back-to-School Round-Up: Snackeez, Flips Audio, Copper Fit, and Master Lock

As we get settled into the routine of the new year, my teen daughters are enjoying the review of several new items to the market, great for several back-to-school needs.IMG_20140826_185202119

1. Snackeez Travel Cup (MSRP: $9.99): My 16-yr-old literally squealed when she saw the Snackeez drink/snack combo cup on the counter. Dishwater safe, this 2-in-1 snack cup boasts a fliptop snack lid, 4 oz snack cup, non-slip grip and 16 oz. drinking cup. She loved filling the top with Triscuits and the bottom with pink lemonade and loved the curious glances all day at school the first day. Everything stayed sealed in and safe until ready to consume.

Snackeez

2. Flips Audio FH2814BK Collapsible HD Headphones and Stereo Speakers, Black (MSRP: $120): These incredibly cool headphones that flip to become speakers were immediately snapped up by my 17-yr-old daughter who loves anything audio/video (just like her dad). She wants to go to college for film and picks up technology very fast. Flips are headphones with custom vented ear cups & memory foam that turn into 40mm neodymium speakers with amplified sound. They fold and store in a protective case that comes with purchase. A rechargeable Li-Polymer battery recharges via standard USB cord.

3. Copper Fit Copper Infused Knee Sleeve (MSRP $19.99/2 + $7.99 s&h on Copper Fit website) – My 16-yr-old plays volleyball and rides horses, doing both almost daily during the Fall. She gets aches and pains in her ankles and I thought she could perhaps try the knee compression sleeve for her leg. She thought it felt like a legging and took it off. I think I would need to buy a smaller sleeve for her than the one received for review. The benefits of the sleeve are that it helps reduce recovery time of muscles, wick sweat away from the body, provides support for muscle stiffness and pain and supports improved circulation of active muscles.

4. Master Lock Dialspeed Electronic Combination Padlock (MSRP $39.68): (Note: The vendor on Amazon lists it at $89 but the Masterlock website lists it at $39.68) This nifty digital padlock is mine to treasure. My kids are provided locks at school so I get to use this one when I go to the Y or other various places I need to secure my belongings. Love the lightup keypad with one hand operation. And, if you forget your password, head over to masterlockvault.com where you can back up your passwords for easy retrieval. (Note: that’s my daughter’s chipped nail polish showing off the cool light-up feature – just sayin’).

MasterLock Digital

Now through September 7, 2014 visit www.MasterLockPhotoHunt.com for a chance to win back-to-school security items, and create a wish list for easy shopping.

(Disclosure: I was sent the above items for review thanks to Snackeez, FlipsAudio, Copper Fit and MasterLock. All thoughts and opinions are my own.)

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month & Alex’s Million Mile – Run.Walk.Ride. #Journey2aMillion

ALEXS MILLION MILE

This September, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation is going the distance in launching Alex’s Million Mile – Run. Walk. Ride.

With firsthand knowledge of just how far parents of children with cancer would go to find a cure for their child, the Foundation will challenge supporters everywhere to go the extra mile this September, collectively running, walking or cycling one million miles to work toward better treatments and ultimately cures for all kids with cancer.

One Month. One Cause. One Million Miles.

The brainchild of Foundation Co-Executive Director, Jay Scott, a running enthusiast, Alex’s Million Mile invites ambitious individuals, as well as teams, to pledge to run/walk/ride and contribute to the one million mile goal during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Drawing from the inspiration of Foundation creator Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who set out to raise $1 million through lemonade stands in 2004, Jay Scott feels that through combined efforts, reaching one million miles in just thirty days is attainable. The initiative provides a fun, easy and free way for people across the country to make a difference in the fight against childhood cancer.

Alex’s Million Mile will utilize both the MapMyFitness applications and the ability for participants to manually enter the miles they log daily. Individuals and teams who participate can log as many or as few miles as their ability level allows, every mile will count toward the larger goal. For those wishing to push themselves to reach 100 miles throughout the month, individuals will need to average 3-4 miles a day, while teams can split up the 100 miles. For instance, a group of 4 employees can walk a mile at lunch every day and easily reach their goal.

In its inaugural year, Alex’s Million Mile (formerly known as the Million Mile Run), mobilized more than 5,000 participants to log 250,000 miles and raise over $500,000 for the cause. Among the various ways that miles were logged by participants from coast to coast: parents walked their children to school each day, logging one mile each way; families walked to Friday night dinners and back; instead of taking public transportation, individuals ran to work or evening outings. The possibilities are endless, with each step being counted toward the ultimate goal of logging one million miles, and more importantly raising vital awareness of the number one disease killer of children under the age of 15 in the United States.

New to the 2014 event, Booster, LLC  (www.booster.com) will provide participants a platform to easily launch their own t-shirt fundraising campaigns to support their Alex’s Million Mile efforts.Participants who sign up for Alex’s Million Mile will have the opportunity to use Booster to create their own designs and in turn sell custom t-shirts to raise money without buying in advance or holding any inventory.  To learn more, or to launch a Booster campaign to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, visit: https://www.booster.com/alexs-lemonade-stand.

Individuals and teams who are interested in participating or learning more about Alex’s Million Mile can visit AlexsMillionMile.org where they will find a video detailing the effort, testimonials from those who participated last year, and starting in September – live updates from social media on efforts in 2014 utilizing the hashtag #Journey2aMillion.

ALEXS MILLION MILE About Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $80 million toward fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 450 pediatric cancer research projects nationally. Sweet Sixteen Care of Toyota Venza

Last week, two very amazing things happened. One, my baby girl turned 16! Second,  I received a Toyota Venza to drive for a week which I had to make clear to my daughter she was NOT getting for her birthday but we could use to make her birthday all that more special with so many fun features to get us where we needed to go.

On the day the Venza arrived, it was raining. Uggh, what a yucky day but I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw my test car pull up in same sleek black as the other three cars in our family “fleet.” We have a black Suburban, black pick-up and black sportwagon so a black Venza was like one of the family.

I drove the Venza to work all week,  to the barn on Saturday, to the grocery store for party supplies, to church on Sunday and finally to a WINNING Phillies game on Monday night. The features I liked are as follows:

TOYOTA VENZA FUN FEATURES:

Back-up camera – As you can see in the picture below, the Venza has the camera that shows you what’s behind you when you are backing up. This was uber helpful down a tight driveaway at a friend’s house.

Roomy Interior – The Venza is as roomy as any SUV without the massive feeling of a truck like my Suburban and not as small as the Jetta we have. It was the perfect blend for the tall people in my family.

Phone Charging Slot – It’s a small add-on but totally shows a shift in our modern culture. There is a place near the front console to insert your phone and have the wire go through the bottom to the storage area where the charging slots are available in USB and standard cigarette lighter style slot.

Toyota Venza

OTHER IMPORTANT TOYOTA VENZA POINTS:

Starting price: $28,915 MSRP

Engine: Available in 4-wheel & V6.

Features: low center of gravity, wide stance and available 20-in. wheels.

Hill Start Assist Control: Keeps car from rolling backward on a hill.

Amenities: Dual zone automatic climate control, Star Safety System including 6 active safety features, seven airbags, blindspot mirrors and so much more.

Smart Key System with Push Button Start (at $31,960 price).
The smart key system took some getting used to. You set the key somewhere near the starter in a cup holder or door holder and push the start button. It was very easy to leave them in the car, shut the door and have to reopen to get them out so I could lock the door. The week the Venza arrived, we had just had several cars stolen in the neighborhood (and returned by the police since the joyriders left them in the next neighborhood) and I was very conscious of needing to lock the car.

Then, before we knew it, it was Party-time for my Sweet Sixteen daughter — look how much room in the back! (Gif image by my techno-savvy daughter). We loaded up with each stop for more party supplies and we had room to spare.

Thank you, Toyota, for a fun ride. Perhaps when one is two years old and has a few miles on it to bring down the price, maybe we’ll invest.

CLOSED: BACK-TO-SCHOOL GIVEAWAY: DECK wireless speaker @SolRepublic & Motorola

sol republic deckRecently, I received a DECK — the portable wireless speaker by Sol Republic and Motorola – and I LOVED it so much I am giving a brand new one away too! If you can’t wait, Best Buy stocks these nifty little devices too.

(Photo Credit: Yellow DECK pict offered by Sol Republic for this review)

Let’s talk nitty gritty now. This little device retails full-price just under $200 and as sound afficionados may wonder, I hear you asking — what do I get for that?

I’ll preface my comments by saying – I am NOT a sound expert. I am your average user who can’t tell you if the lows are better than the highs but I can tell you that the Sol Republic DECK was designed for mobile convenience not high-def surround sound and therefore met my goals for this product, but I’ll get to that in a minute.

For the techies in the crowd, let’s start with some product details:

  • Package includes DECK wireless speaker, carry case, USB Cable AC adapter, 3.5 mm audio cable.
  • Charges via mini USB cable for 10 hours of play
  • Powered by large R2 Sound Engines and a bass port for bigger sound
  • NFC or Bluetooth pairing: Supports A2DP, HandsFree & AVRCP Profiles
  • Offers Heist Mode (TM) for multi-device pairing – up to 5 devices.
  • Speakerphone for hands free calling
  • 360 degree full sound
  • Outdoor boost with extra volume
  • Acoustically transparent slim-fit case lets you listen to the DECK while you protect it
  • Original retail price $199.99 but check around for several places selling for lower.

So how does the SOL REPUBLIC 1500-10 DECK Wireless Speaker work?

DECK SOL

STEPS TO OPERATING Sol Republic DECK: (Note: I was using a MotoX smartphone also made by Motorola to test this device.)

  1. Charge your device via the USB cord.
  2. Turn on the Bluetooth option on your device.
  3. Turn on the DECK. Pairing Mode starts automatiically.
  4. Go to the Blue-Tooth Menu on your device and select DECK. (Note: You may need to search for a new device for the option to come up. Enter 00000 if prompted.)
  5. Once the two pair, you will get a pairing complete tone.
  6. For NFC enabled devices, simply tap your device to the top of the DECK or if that doesn’t work on your device, use the above EASYPAIR(TM) method.
  7. Adjust sound using the plus and minus buttons on the top of the DECK. (Note: Thanks to wireless wonder, your device does not need to touch the DECK for sound to project.)
  8. Use the Motorola button on the top center to play & pause music, answer & end calls, change to Outdoor mode and Heist(TM) Lock.
  9. Use selector switch on side to change between single user and multi-user.

Final Comments:

I used the SOL REPUBLIC 1500-10 DECK Wireless Speaker effectively in two scenarios over the last week: playing an audiobook wirelessly while cleaning around the house and in playing the playlist of my daughter’s friend off her tablet using the 3.5 mm audio cable.

In playing the audiobook, I found the sound to be completely sufficient to hear the narrator throughout each room where I carried the DECK. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I could start the book via my charging phone in the bedroom and carry the DECK into the bathroom while I cleaned there. There was no change in sound resolution from room to room over bluetooth wireless even when I charged my phone downstairs and carried the DECK upstairs. How cool is that!

At a recent birthday party, my daughter wanted to share her friend’s playlist stored on her tablet. We tried pairing via bluetooth which did not work since the profile wouldn’t come up on her device but the 3.5 mm audio cable worked perfectly. We have great speakers for playing music in our house and normally wouldn’t use a portable device for a party but in this case, for a group standing in the kitchen,  it was a perfect quick solution and you know kids these days – everything needs to be easy and fast. It was also great for outdoors when people went out on the deck for an hour and made s’mores in our fire pit. My husband is a sound snob but he wasn’t there at the moment to hook up his variety of sound options. I like easy and fast too so it totally worked for me.

On using multiple devices, we found when pairing to both mine and my husband’s phone, that you pair to one for phone calls, etc., and then to multi-devices for music only. I could receive a call coming through my phone but my husband could only join in with music. The DECK did not answer incoming calls from his device while mine was still paired as the primary user. We did not test further but he was able to play music effectively from his Amazon music app. Being a sound snob, he always prefers the surround sound he installed for us around the house but comparing our hardwired home system to a portable device is apples and oranges and not really fair when they are used for different scenarios.

Ultimately, the device achieves its goal. It’s a bit pricey but you can already see prices coming down around the web, making this item affordable and desirable as an easy-use speaker in individual rooms throughout the house, in the car, in a dorm room or other.
